Drunken driver receives probation

THE GAZETTE

A woman who killed a motorcyclist while backing out of a driveway Aug. 1, 2007, in Colorado Springs was sentenced to probation and community service Friday.

Catherine Price, 23, pleaded guilty in October to the drunken driving death of 44-year-old Roger Tucker.

In exchange for her plea, prosecutors dropped a charge that could have meant 12 years in prison. Judge David Prince on Friday morning approved the plea agreement and sentenced her to five years of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service.

Under the deal, Price avoided a 30-day jail term by attending a monthlong alcohol treatment course.

Matthew Tucker, the victim's son, said in an e-mail that Price "deserved a second chance" because "no punishment to her would ever change the reality that our father is no longer here."

"There's not a single day that goes by that she does not experience a tremendous amount of pain and suffering," her attorney, Pat Mike, said in a phone conversation.
