Bacons likely not 'footloose' after hike

THE GAZETTE

It'll take more than just dance shoes, but Kevin Bacon plans to hike 12.6 miles up to the Pikes Peak summit for the free charity concert Saturday.

The Bacon Brothers were listed as headliners to perform, but it was uncertain whether the two would join registered hikers for the charity event.

About 95 hikers have already registered for the exclusive event organized by the Love Hope Strength Foundation, which supports cancer treatment and research. Five spots are still open for the public to register. The event will take the first 100 hikers who pay $50 for registration ($54 via credit card) and pledge to raise or pay at least $1,000 for cancer research.

Jason Damata, a spokesperson for the foundation, said that the brothers decided last week to hike the 14,115-foot mountain to be "more involved" with the charity's cause.

The trek is expected to take a toll that might affect the concert. The Bacon Brothers will trim their show to under an hour.

The drumStrong foundation, which supports charities for cancer, has been added to the event and will welcome the hikers at the summit with more than 100 drums, including a number of drums for hikers as well. They join The White Buffalo and Cy Curnin of The Fixx, in the lineup of musicians. Musicians of both bands also plan to hike.

But whether The Bacon Brothers will be ready for the altitude or the hike will have to be seen.

"It won't be easy for them," Damata said. "They've had less than a week to acclimate to the altitude."
