Former Boy Scout leader, Carson soldier pleads guilty to sexual assault

THE CASE: The former leader of Boy Scouts Troop 375 was arrested Aug. 11, 2007, on allegations he showed a 13-year-old scout pornography, gave the boy marijuana and alcohol, then sexually assaulted him. The 15-year scout volunteer, also a Fort Carson soldier, was immediately fired from the Pikes Peak Council.
THE SUSPECT: Johnny Ray Barmore, 35, is an Army sergeant 1st class and has been in the service since 1992. He violated his bond in January by coming in contact with a 16-year-old girl and has been held on $500,000 bond since.
WHAT'S NEW: Wednesday, Barmore pleaded guilty to felony counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of minor, in an agreement with the state. He will be sentenced to six years to up to life in prison on the assault charge, and two years on the delinquency charge, to be served at the same time, according to Deputy District Attorney Nan Scranton. All other charges were dismissed.
WHAT'S NEXT: Barmore is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 19. A Fort Carson spokeswoman said Army officials typically wait until after a defendant is sentenced before moving forward with possible discharge proceedings. Barmore is being held without bond at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
