Barn destroyed in afternoon Peyton blaze

THE GAZETTE

A barn burned to the ground just after noon Saturday at Highway 24 and McClelland Road, about four miles east of Peyton.

“It was a guy doing some burning and wind gusts moved it over to his barn and a grassy area,” said Capt. Kent Smith, a Peyton Fire Department spokesman.

Smith said that two engine companies, two water tenders and two brush trucks along with 14 firefighters raced to the fire after a 9-1-1 call came in at 12:40 p.m.

The crews were able to put out the blaze by 2 p.m. and kept the fire from getting to the house on the property. One person was there when the fire began and nobody was hurt.
