50 seats are up for grabs in local school boards

It’s a big year for school boards in the Pikes Peak area’s 17 districts: 50 seats will be up for grabs in the November general election.

Those interested in running can pick up petitions at their respective school district offices beginning Aug. 5 and start circulating them that day. The signatures must be turned in by Aug. 28, according to the election calendar set by the El Paso County Election Office.

Ballots must be set by Sept. 4. Those who win the Nov. 3 election must be sworn into office by Nov. 30.
Below is a district-by-district roundup of what seats are open, including the names of those who hold them and whether they are term-limited or eligible to run again. Also included is the location where those interested in running can pick up petition packets.


ACADEMY SCHOOL DISTRICT 20
Number of seats on board: five
Number of openings/length of term: three four-year terms
Seats up for election: Vice President Don Lundberg and board member Linda Van Matre.
Anyone term limited: President Ann Elrod

Harrison school district closer to pay for performance for teachers
Should teacher pay be based on performance?
Yes. Teachers should be rewarded for good work, and poor performers should be weeded out.
No. Pay for performance is just a back-door way of blaming teachers for other problems in the education system.
It depends on what "performance" means. It's good if there's a fair measurement of performance.
