Burglars hit Summit House

THE GAZETTE AND NEWS SERVICES

They didn’t come for the doughnuts or the amazing view.

The burglars who broke into the Pikes Peak Summit House Saturday night instead got away with an undisclosed amount of cash after breaking a window and climbing inside, Colorado Springs Police Department Sgt. Kerry Duran said.

Police got the call at 6:25 a.m. Sunday when workers arrived for the day and found burglars had broken into the management office — with the words “Cash Room” on the door — and taken the safe inside, Duran said. The burglars drove to the summit by stealing a Pikes Peak Highway-owned pickup truck, Sgt. Mark Comte said. They apparently made it back down before the toll road opened at 7 a.m., he said.

The road, operated by the city of Colorado Springs, closes each day at 5 p.m.

Comte said he isn’t sure how the burglars got through the locked toll gate, but it wasn’t broken Sunday morning.

Duran said police don’t have any suspects and don’t know how many people participated in the robbery.
