Police arrest alleged car thief after brief chase

THE GAZETTE

A man on probation was arrested in south Colorado Springs on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of burglary tools and drug-related offenses early Sunday morning.

Colorado Springs police Officer Jeff Mitchell pulled over Brian Caley Powell at about 3:50 a.m. in the 3800 block of Lakehurst Drive because the car he was driving, a white Acura Integra, matched the description of a car that had been reported stolen.

As Mitchell completed a records check on the car and driver, Powell ran away.

Powell, 29, was caught after a brief chase. A preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was reported stolen. Several car stereos, marijuana and keys were found in the vehicle, officers said.

Powell was arrested on suspicion of aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of burglary tools and offenses related to marijuana, police said.
