An attendance clerk at Florence Middle School is being held in the Fremont County jail on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child, Florence police said.

Stephanie Kay Bellino was arrested Thursday evening on suspicion of sexual assault of a child by one in a position of trust, Florence Police Chief Timothy Bell said in a written news release.

"This case is currently ongoing, and I cannot comment any further about the case due to that fact," Bell wrote.

Bellino was placed in jail under a $50,000 bond, police said. A representative could not immediately be reached for more information.

Police began investigating Aug. 14 after receiving a complaint from the school district.

Bellino works in the front office as an attendance clerk and also supervises in-school suspension and detention, said Cyndy Scriven, superintendent of schools for the Fremont School District Re-2. Bellino will remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, she said.

The Canon City police and Fremont County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
