Christina Whitelaw, St. Mary's

Basketball players Western New Mexico’s Chad Carter and Colorado Christian’s Christina Whitelaw have been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Month for January 2012.  The league’s 14 sports information directors nominate student-athletes from their institution which are then selected by the RMAC office.

A sophomore guard, Whitelaw averaged 16.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 4.6 steals and 0.6 blocks per game in January, helping Colorado Christian to a 6-2 record.  Whitelaw notched two triple-doubles in the month of January, and is now leading the nation in the category (she is the only player in Division II with more than one triple double). She finished the month ranked second in the nation in steals, averaging 4.5 per game. She totaled 37 steals in the month of January, including a season high eight against Regis on Jan 6.

Whitelaw put up three double-double performances in January, including a 26-point, 11 rebound showing against Regis on Jan. 6, 22 points and 14 rebounds against Western on Jan. 20, and 24 points and 13 rebounds against Nebraska-Kearney on Jan. 27.  She scored in double digits in seven of the eight games in January, and stole the ball at least four times in six games. The Colorado Springs native was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Player of the Week three times – for her offensive and defensive efforts on Jan. 9, and again for her offensive efforts on Jan. 23. She also picked up NCCAA National Player of the Week honors Jan. 9 and 23. Whitelaw led CCU to a 6-2 record in the month of January, including an upset of then-ranked No. 2 Metro State (25 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals).

She was also RMAC player of the week ending in the first week of February.

Chucky Jeffery, Sierra

Junior guard Chucky Jeffery leads the Colorado Buffaloes at 15.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. She is prominent on the Pac-12 leader board, ranking third in steals (2.5 spg), fourth in assists, sixth in free-throw percentage (.744) and defensive rebounds (5.6 dprg), seventh in scoring, 10th in overall rebounding, blocked shots (1.1 bpg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.8) and 14th in field-goal percentage (.449) and 3-point percentage (.338).

Jeffery has scored in double figures in 20 of Colorado’s 24 games and reached the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season with a game-high 21 against Arizona. She became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 points during her 18-point performance against Oregon. She has a team-best five double-doubles on the season, tied for 11th in the Pac-12. She was the MVP of CU’s Omni Hotels Classic and was named Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 4.

Jordan Lee, Widefield

Courtney Carnes  scored the game winner to lift Buffalo State (7-13-2/4-10-1) to a 2-1 victory over visiting Cortland (4-14-1/2-12-1) in an ECAC West game  at the Ice Arena.

The Bengals outshot Cortland, 26-20, and Jordan Lee turned aside 19 shots to earn her seventh win of the season.

Jared Esquivel, Falcon

Playing in 40-degree temperatures did not stop the Peru State College Bobcat baseball team from capturing their first win of the season. After travelling to Bethany, Okla., in anticipation of playing four games, the Bobcats ended instead playing just one game, but won 8-4 over Southern Nazarene University.

In the top of the fourth, Kyle Fredrickson reached base on a walk and Jared Esquivel came in to run for Fredrickson. Esquivel advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third on an SNU throwing error. Jonathan Castillo then reached base on a fielder’s choice driving in Esquivel giving the ‘Cats a two-run cushion at 6-4.

Chris Zaremba, Liberty

A senior on the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team was recognized Monday with top weekly recognition from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

Senior assistant captain Chris Zaremba was named MASCAC Player of the Week for his efforts in a pair of wins last week.  Zaremba was a key component who helped the Panthers win two games and move back into first place in the MASCAC.

A 5'8", 170-pound forward, Zaremba tallied three goals in PSU’s 2-0 week, including a power play marker and a game-winner. He scored once in Thursday’s 4-2 win over Westfield State and added two more goals, including the game-winner, in Saturday’s 4-3 triumph over Framingham State.  His third-period power play goal against Framingham ended up as the game-winner.

Zaremba, who missed four games earlier this season, has played in 16 games and ranks second on the team with eight goals and tied for fifth with 12 points (8-4-12).  Three of his eight goals were game-winners.

Plymouth State, 12-6-2 overall, is atop the MASCAC standings with a 7-3-2 league mark with four games remaining. PSU has a week off before returning to the ice this Saturday, Feb. 11, with a visit to Salem State University.

Chucky Jeffery, Sierra

Junior guard Chucky Jeffery scored 18 points and became the 24th player in Colorado history to reach 1,000 for a career, but one prolonged drought gave Oregon a 67-62 decision Saturday afternoon at the Matthew Knight Arena.

The Buffaloes drop their third straight game, falling to 15-7 overall, 4-7 in Pac-12 play. Oregon improves to 13-10, 5-6.

Colorado went 9 minutes, 18 seconds between the end of the first half and beginning of the second half without a field goal, allowing the Ducks to erase a double-digit deficit with a game-changing 18-0 run, including 13 straight to start the second half.

CU, which led by as much as 13 in the first half, hit just 33 percent in the second half and missed 13 consecutive shots during Oregon’s big run.

Jeffery, now with 1,010 points, scored her 1,000th point on a layup with 12:46 in the second half.  Lexy Kresl had a career-high 17 points and matched a personal best with five 3-point field goals.

“Chucky does so much for us, and I know she wanted the win more than 1,000 points, but it’s quite an accomplishment,” CU head coach Linda Lappe said.

Chucky Jeffery is the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points (now 1,010). She is the 10th player to achieve 1,000 before her senior year. Surpassing 1,000 in her 81st career game, she ties Tera Bjorklund (2000-04) for the ninth fastest to reach 1,000.

Jeffery tied her own team season highs with seven assists and six steals. Jeffery has 22 steals over the last six games (3.7 spg).

Jeffery climbed into a tie for 9th in steals on CU’s all-time list with Julie Hoehing (1980-84) at 180. Jeffery is also tied for 14th in assists with Stephanie Mack (1989-83) with 316. She had four rebounds, moving past Mindy Henry for 17th place with 544.

2/4/12

Jared Esquivel, Falcon

Esquivel has largely been a pinch-runner, but looks to receive more playing time this year for Peru State's (Neb.) baseball team as a sophomore infielder.

Brett Green, Peyton

A pair of home conference wins combined with losses by six of the top 10 teams in nation allowed the Colorado Mines men's basketball team to jump six spots from No. 11 to No. 5 in this week's NABC/Division II Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

The Orediggers (17-2, 13-2 RMAC) posted a 98-68 win over Chadron State on Friday before avenging an early season loss to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday with a 77-61 victory. Junior Brett Green was named this week's RMAC/Baden Offensive Player of the Week after leading the team with an average of 18.0 points per game.

The No. 5 ranking is the highest in program history, and tops the No. 6 ranking the squad received earlier this season on Dec. 13, 2011. CSM has spent the entire season in the top 25 rankings after opening the season at No. 18.

Jordan Lee, Widefield

Jordan Lee had 17 and 24 saves in two Buffalo State hockey losses this past week.

1/27/12

Jenna Howerton, Pine Creek

Jenna Howerton, a two-time all-state selection at Pine Creek High School who played at UNLV last year, has transferred to Colorado College and joined the women’s soccer program for the 2012 season.

A sophomore forward, Howerton will have three years of eligibility with the Tigers.

“It’s one of those situations where we couldn’t have found a better fit,” coach Geoff Bennett said. “Jenna is a great player who is an even better person because she comes from a great family, which we always love to add to our program.”

Last season with the Rebels, Howerton played in all 21 games and tied for second on the team with three goals. She struck for the game winner just 11:42 into her first collegiate contest, a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside and later added a pair of tallies, including one in overtime, to give UNLV a 4-3 triumph against Loyola Marymount midway through the season.

“We’re getting a very good player who also has been very well coached,” Bennett said. “Jenna will be a different type of forward for us. She likes to play with her back to the goal a little bit more than our current forwards, so she brings something we don’t have.”

Howerton also will re-unite with former Pride Soccer Club teammate and current Tiger midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis, with whom she won a pair of state championships as members of the Predators ’93.

Regan Tekavec, Doherty

Concordia University Director of Athletics Tom Rubbelke has announced the hiring of Regan Tekavec as Assistant Athletic Director. Tekavec will start Feb. 1 and serve as compliance coordinator and senior women's administrator.

"Regan has already been able to acquire a vast amount of college experience in her young career and I have no doubt that she will make a tremendous impact for our athletic department."

She comes to Concordia after serving the past two athletic seasons at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference of which Concordia was formerly a member before joining the Northern Sun. At the UMAC, Tekavec was hired as the league's first-ever assistant commissioner in a two-year position made possible primarily through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority & Women's Internship grant program.

With the UMAC, she was actively involved in all aspects of the league office including compliance & governance, championships, officiating development, public relations, marketing, sports information and fiscal management.

Prior to joining the UMAC, Tekavec was an assistant sports information director at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., her alma mater where she was a student-athlete on the volleyball team.

Tekavec reflected on returning the conference at which she competed, "I am very excited to become a part of the Golden Bear athletic staff. Although since the completion of my time as a Division II student-athlete I have had experience in various areas of athletics, I have retained a strong affinity for the Division II philosophy and I am eager to return to the Northern Sun. I look forward to working with the coaches and staff to continue to uphold the already strong reputation of Concordia University."

She's also worked for the NBA Development League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Sioux Empire Baseball and USA Volleyball in a career that has exposed her to collegiate, professional, Olympic and community sports administration.

Jeffery scored all seven of her points in the second half, and none more important than the 10-foot jumper just to the right of the key off a Meagan Malcolm-Peck pass. The win snaps a three-game Colorado skid as the Buffaloes improve to 14-4 overall, 3-4 in league play. Arizona falls to 13-6, 2-5.

Jordan Lee, Widefield

Courtney Carnes got Buffalo State (6-9-2/3-6-1) on the board first, but No. 2 RIT (16-1-1/10-1-1) scored six unanswered as the host Tigers defeated the Bengals, 6-1, in an ECAC West hockey game. Drew Zamora, Rampart

Northern Arizona punter Drew Zamora has been selected to play in the Casino del Sol College All-Star Game. The game will be played at Kino Stadium in Tucson on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Arizona.

“This game is a really big opportunity for me,” said Zamora. “To be a smaller school guy to get in a big game like this I hope to showcase what I can do for my hopeful future. The professional attitude of the game really sets a good stage for me. I am really excited.”

Zamora averaged 41.5 yards per punt with 10 punts of 50 or more yards with a season-long of 70 yards. He earned All-America honorable mention accolades from Beyond College Sports last week. He graduated with a degree in hotel and restaurant management in December.

“Since graduation, I have moved to Tempe and have been training full time,” said Zamora. “I have been working on my flexibility and stretching three times a day. We are kicking three days a week and tweaking some things in the punt game with my drop. So far I have seen great results and better consistency.”

After transferring to NAU from New Mexico, Zamora handled the kickoff and punting duties for three seasons with the Lumberjacks. He was an All-Big Sky second-team selection in 2010 with a 42.2 per punt average with 16 punts inside-the-20 with a long of 70. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native ranked third in the Big Sky and 12th in the nation in punting average, recording two 70-yard punts during the season to become the second punter in school history to record two punts of 70 yards or more in the same season.

“I have lots of good memories at NAU especially with the specialists group,” said Zamora. “We had a real close group. NAU really gave me a chance and Coach Souers gave me an opportunity to keep playing football. I am going to remember the big games in the Skydome and playing in the Big Sky Conference.”

The Casino del Sol College All-Star Game, formerly known as the Blue-Gray Game and Eastham Energy All-Star Classic, will feature more than 90 college seniors in a game played in front of scouts from more than 30 NFL teams. Former college coaches Houston Nutt and Pat Hill will serve as the game coaches.

The All-Star Game moved to Tucson this year. In 2011 it was played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Chucky Jeffery, Sierra

University of Colorado junior guard Chucky Jeffery was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, Commissioner Larry Scott announced.

Jeffery’s award is Colorado’s first for women’s basketball and the fourth overall for the Buffaloes in their inaugural Pac-12 season, joining three football winners from earlier this fall. The league Player of the Week honor is also the first for women’s basketball since Brittany Spears was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 23, 2009. For Jeffery, it’s her second similar honor, as she was the Big 12 Freshman of the Week winner on Jan. 11, 2010.

A native of Colorado Springs, Jeffery led the Buffaloes to wins over San Francisco (84-66) and Idaho (68-59), posting big numbers in both games. She recorded career-highs in points in consecutive games, first scoring 26 points against USF, then bettering that mark with 30 against the Vandals. Against the Dons, she made all of her 3-point (2-2) and free throw attempts (4-4) while shooting 10-of-14 from the floor to go along with 12 rebounds. Grabbing 10 boards against Idaho, she also had a good shooting night, going 10-for-17 from the floor, 6-for-7 from behind the three-point arc and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. Her 30-10 double-double was the first of its kind for a CU player since Jackie McFarland had 32 points and 12 rebounds against Villanova in the 2008 Postseason WNIT.

Christina Whitelaw, St. Mary's

The Colorado School of Mines' women's basketball team put three scorers in double figures and used sizeable height and depth advantages to post a conference-opening 71-61 victory over Colorado Christian.

The Orediggers (2-5, 1-0 RMAC) posted a 38-to-32 rebounding margin while also denying seven CCU (2-5, 0-1 RMAC) shot attempts during the contest. Mines ran 13 players on the floor and those fresh legs combined with a 40.0 percent (6-of-15) effort from long range in the second half allowed them increase their lead throughout the final 20 minutes. A 7-of-9 effort from the foul line in the second stanza, including a 6-of-6 showing during the last 30 seconds put the game out of reach and solidified the victory.

The Orediggers surrendered the lead for the first time in the game with 34 seconds to go in the first half on a jumper by Christina Whitelaw that put the Cougars up 31-30, but a baby hook at the foul line by senior Stephanie Fogle put Mines back up 32-31 with five seconds to go before recess.

“I was just playing the game, I didn’t force anything and I just took what was given to me, I knocked down my shots and that is what coach tells me to do is when you get open shots; take them,” Jeffery said.

Earlier, CU won its third consecutive Omni Hotels Classic championship and remained unbeaten with a 58-48 victory over Wisconsin at the Coors Events Center.

Improving to 5-0 for the first time since the 2000-01 season, the Buffaloes trailed only once against the Badgers (2-0) and maintained a double-digit lead for the game’s final 15:34. UW dropped to 2-5 on the season.

Jeffery, who scored 28 points and collected 20 rebounds in two games, was named the tournament MVP, while Kresl was named to the all-tournament team. Jeffery averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the two games.

"It’s huge, it’s our own tournament so we know we have to come in and be ready for anything. We can’t take anybody lightly, but we know we’re hosting something in our house that we have to take the tournament. I think it’s real great, 2 years coming in. Us starting 5-0, that’s big, because I don’t think we’ve been undefeated this early for years. So I think that’s real great," Jeffery said.

On being named tournament MVP, Jeffery said: "It’s big, I’m thankful. It just makes me want to keep working and I know I can’t dwell on it. I love it, it’s good, it’s great but I just got to come back ready to work harder. Got to get some shots in obviously, so I’m not great in all areas but it’s good. It feels good."

It is also her 13th double-figure rebounding game and her 41st double-figure scoring game.

Jeffery leads the Buffaloes at 14.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and five assists per game.
