Antiquarian book events set

The Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar wil be held on Colorado College campus Aug. 8 through 13. There will be a reception and free keynote address 7 p.m., Aug. 8  at Bemis Hall, 920 N. Cascade Ave. Speaker will be Otto Prenzer, proprietor of the Mysterious Bookshop in New York City and  publisher of The Armchair Detective, an Edgar-winning quarterly journal devoted to mystery and suspense fiction. Free lunch paperwork headed to parents


Colorado Springs School District 11 officials will send home with students letters to parents and applications about eligibility for free or reduced-price meals. Children from families whose income is at or below set levels for a certain number of family members are eligible.
Each school has a copy of the complete policy. Applications may be submitted throughout the year.

Adult Ed offices move to Irving

Colorado Springs School District 11 Adult and Family Education has moved into the former Irving Middle School, 1702 N. Murray Blvd., between Constitution Avenue and Palmer Park Boulevard. Classes also will be held at other locations in the district.
Registration and orientation for GED Preparation Classes will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 17 and 19; 1-4 p.m. Aug. 25 and 27; and 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 26 and 31. You must attend both days of your chosen session. Classes cost $30 for registration and $50 for tuition. There is no class cost for students younger than 21.
Registration for Adult English Language Classes will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 2 and 7, and also at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 and 9. Classes cost $50 for the fall session, September through the middle of December.
Registration for Family Literacy Adult English Language and GED preparation classes will be held at five elementary schools and Irving Family Literacy. Here are dates and locations for Family Literacy:
9:30 a.m., Aug. 24, Hunt Elementary School, 917 E. Moreno Ave.
9:30 a.m., Aug. 25-26, Wilson Elementary School, 1409 De Reamer Circle
9:45 a.m., Aug. 31, Mark Twain Elementary School, 3402 E. San Miguel St.
5:30 p.m., Sept. 2, Edison Elementary School, 3125 N. Hancock
8:30 a.m., Sept. 7-9, Irving Family Literacy, 1702 N. Murray Blvd. Ave.

Charter to offer after-school care

Colorado Kids Adventures will run a before and after school care program at the Academy for Advanced & Creative Learning, 2510 N. Chestnut St., the recently opened charter school in Colorado Springs School District 11.
Colorado Kids Adventures is hiring creative and energetic program assistants and leaders for the local program, as well as programs in the Denver metro area. Group leaders assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment for children, and also activities and communication with parents.

Ribbon cutting planned at D-8's new school


A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Weikel Elementary School in Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 will be held 1 p.m.,  Aug. 9, at the school, 6565 Lindstrom. It is on Fort Carson, so allow extra time to access the post.

State board to consider new standards

On Monday morning, Colorado School Board of Education member Peggy Littleton will convene a session for the public comment on the adoption of the Common Core Standards, the revised state education standards that outline what students should know in each grade in various subject areas. Testimony may be limited to up to three minutes per person. Other board members may also be present. The session will be 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. Monday, in the State Board Room, Colorado Department of Education, 201 E. Colfax Ave., Room 101, Denver.
Immediately following the public comment session, the Colorado State Board of Education will convene a special meeting by phone to vote on whether to adopt the Common Core Standards. Two of the seven board members have voiced opposition.
All State Board of Education meetings are open to the public.

Calhan to offer driver's ed course

Calhan School District RJ1 is offering driver’s education classes Thurday through Tuesday. The 30 hours of instruction will include 6 hours behind the wheel.
Cost of the class is $175for students in the district, and $350 for others.
After receiving classroom instruction next week, students must get a driving permit and complete 30 hours practice with parents or guardians. Then as part of the class, they will receive a final six hours of on-the-road instruction from a certified instructor.
Classes will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1450 Fifth Street (Highway 24) in Calhan. For information call Andrea Fowler at 210-8094.
