BRUCE BACK IN TOWN

Rep. Doug Bruce returned to his old stomping grounds Thursday when he sat in on a hearing of the House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. The Colorado Springs Republican was kicked off the committee two weeks ago after refusing to vote on a resolution honoring veterans.

Bruce returned to testify against a bill that was written partly in response to his decision to delay joining the House until after the session had started, keeping him eligible to serve four more full terms. House Bill 1345 would require appointed lawmakers to take their seats no more than 14 days after being appointed by a vacancy committee.

Although testimony on the bill began, the committee adjourned before a vote could be taken.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Paul Weissmann, D-Louisville, said he hopes debate will resume next week.

COMMITTEE FOR SUNDAY LIQUOR

A bill to allow Sunday sales of liquor, wine and full-strength beer snagged the backing of a House committee, despite two El Paso County lawmakers casting votes against it.

Rep. Amy Stephens, R-Monument, said she voted against Senate Bill 82 because many of her constituents oppose it. House District 20, which includes northern Colorado Springs and Focus on the Family headquarters, is considered one of the most conservative districts in the state.

Rep. Larry Liston, R-Colorado Springs, also voted against it.

The House Business Affairs and Labor Committee sent it to the House Finance Committee by an 8-3 vote.

WELCOME TO AMERICA

A group of 10 Iraqi elected officials from two Baghdad district councils spent the day at the Capitol taking in American government.

The group, which included six men from Adhamiyah and four from Sadr City, watched action on the House floor and in a committee while getting explanations from Democratic Rep. Joe Rice of Littleton, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve who returned from duty in Iraq last month.

The stop in Colorado was part of a national tour hosted by the U.S. State Department.

What's your view?
Good for him. If God has called Haggard to return to ministry, he should obey.
Haggard should stay out of the ministry. He has too much baggage to lead a church.
I don't care what Haggard does, and I'm sick of hearing about him in the news.
Haggard and anyone crazy enough to attend his church deserve each other.
Haggard has a lot to offer as a pastor. Let's give him a chance.
