Ultra applies for fifth drilling location in county

THE GAZETTE

Houston-based Ultra Resources has applied for a fifth drilling location in unincorporated El Paso County.

Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission records show the company's plans to drill five wells on a nine-acre site near the intersection of Highway 94 and S. Blaney Road, northwest of Schriever Air Force Base.

Ultra applied for the permit Tuesday with the COGCC. The company has not applied for a permit with El Paso County yet.

In 2011, Ultra applied for three permits to drill in unincorporated El Paso County and two more in Banning Lewis Ranch, inside Colorado Springs' city limits. It also acquired a fourth, existing, drill site in El Paso County.

El Paso County is processing the four earlier permits under its temporary use permit process, while the new application will be processed under the oil and gas regulations county commissioners approved Tuesday.

The application with the COGCC shows that construction on the Blaney Road site is scheduled to begin April 1 and that Ultra plans to use a closed-loop system for capturing drilling waste, rather than an open pit.

Ultra representatives could not be reached for comment.
