Teen faces charges after fatal wreck in Briargate

A 17-year-old boy faces vehicular homicide charges for allegedly causing a two-car crash in Briargate late Saturday that killed a 62-year-old woman.

Suzanne DiRomualdo died at the scene of the 11 p.m. crash on Briargate Boulevard near Lexington Avenue.

The teen was traveling at a high speed and his red Nissan burst into flames after the crash, Colorado Springs police said. He was treated at Memorial Hospital, then booked into a juvenile facility Sunday morning.

Another 17-year-old riding in the Nissan was also taken to Memorial, but police said he doesn’t face charges.

The teens’ names were not released Sunday.

The driver of the Mazda that DiRomualdo was in sustained broken ribs and a head injury and was taken to Penrose Main. His name also was not released.

Officer Jeff Rymer said alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

“Young guys in fast cars like to drive fast,” Rymer said. “They put not only themselves but others at risk by their reckless driving.”
