THE GAZETTE

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election is 5 p.m. today.
To register to vote in Colorado, a person must be at least 18 years old on the date of the election, a U.S. citizen and have lived in the state and precinct in which he or she intends to register at least 30 days prior to the election. Citizens may obtain voter registration forms at any of the three El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office locations:
-- Centennial Hall, 200 S. Cascade Ave.
-- Powers Branch, southeast corner of Powers Boulevard and Airport Road
-- Chapel Hills Branch, in the Chapel Hills Mall on the north side next to JC Penney A voter registration form is also available on the Clerk and Recorder's Web site, http://car.elpasoco.com/election. The Election Department phone number is 575-8683.
El Paso County election officials said people who are newly registered to vote should check to ensure their registration form was received and the information entered correctly by visiting the Web site.

Harrison school district closer to pay for performance for teachers
Should teacher pay be based on performance?
Yes. Teachers should be rewarded for good work, and poor performers should be weeded out.
No. Pay for performance is just a back-door way of blaming teachers for other problems in the education system.
It depends on what "performance" means. It's good if there's a fair measurement of performance.
