Jury deliberating fate of man accused of killing his father

THE GAZETTE

Jury deliberations will resume Friday in the trial of a Colorado Springs man accused of killing his father and stuffing the body inside a garbage container.

Jurors deliberated just over four hours Thursday without reaching a verdict on the second-degree murder charge against Quenten "Poncho" Abeyta, 32, who is accused of beating his father Russell to death outside the cottage they shared behind a house at 1722 Ivy Place.

In closing statements, prosecutors argued that Abeyta hit his father in the head with a missing rake and then showered before calling 911.

Defense lawyers contend the son had no motive to kill his father and that the police missed clues that could have led to the killer.
