How wet was July? Double the average, with rainy August ahead

The collective sigh of schoolchildren returning to school this month will likely be muted by continued downpours, as the Pikes Peak Region is in the height of monsoon season.

Colorado Springs was thoroughly drenched in July, when 5.39 inches of rain fell on the city — 3.43 inches above normal. On July 29, 1.45 inches fell in 24 hours.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Pueblo predict the rain will continue during the first two weeks of August — the rainiest month of the year — when 3.48 inches of rain normally fall.

Precipitation levels are predicted to be about normal, though stranger things have happened — such as the nearly 4 inches of rain that fell in 24 hours on Aug. 4, 1999.

High temperatures are predicted to be close to the normal 82 degrees, with nighttime lows near the normal 54 degrees.

As always, there is room for the outliers. Such as last year on this day, when it hit 99 degrees. Or when it snowed0.2 inches on Aug. 29, 1952. Or when it only reached a high of 50 degrees on Aug. 31, 1967.

But, if you’re silly enough to bet on Colorado weather, place your chips on the rain.
