Air Force men's basketball forward Bohannon to transfer

THE GAZETTE

The decision to transfer from Air Force wasn’t easy for men’s basketball forward Zach Bohannon.

Bohannon would have been a junior in the fall, and a cadet’s military commitment begins with the start of his junior year.

“It was a complex decision,” Bohannon said. “This place is full of great opportunities. But I didn’t feel a career in the military was for me.”

Bohannon’s departure is a pretty big blow for the Falcons’ basketball team, which hasn’t had much depth in the frontcourt the past couple of years. Bohannon, who is 6-foot-8, missed the first 10 games of the season after undergoing thumb surgery, but played well late. He averaged 4.3 points. His best game came in a win at Utah, when he had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

“It was a very tough decision,” Bohannon said. “I felt like the team was coming on and I felt I was improving. I just felt this was the best time.”

Bohannon said he will be looking for schools closer to his home in Iowa to continue his basketball career. He also released a written statement about his decision.

“I am thankful for all the opportunities and experiences that I have had with the basketball team and at the Air Force Academy,” Bohannon said in the statement. “Some of them will be memories that I’ll have for the rest of my life. However, at this point in time, I have thoughtfully come to the difficult decision that it is in my best interest to voluntarily leave the academy. I greatly appreciate all the support that I have received and I continue to wish nothing but the best to all of the current and future Falcons.”
