Tornado touches down
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning on Sunday evening after a line of severe thunderstorms spawned funnel clouds two miles north of Castle Rock, near Parker and in southern Douglas County visible from the Monument area.
There were no reports of damage but trained weather spotters called in numerous sightings of funnel clouds and a couple reported touchdowns of tornadoes from the storms.
Randy Gray, a meteorlogical technician in Pueblo, said strong storms about 10 miles north of Woodland Park prompted a severe thunderstorm warning for Teller and northern El Paso counties on Sunday evening.
In addition, the tornado warning was issued for Douglas and Elbert counties after the sighting north of Castle Rock.
"They issued the warning for more funnel clouds and possible short lived tornadoes," Gray said. "Trained weather spotters saw funnel clouds. We do not have confirmed tornadoes, however."
El Paso County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Black Forest and County Line Road to investigate possible funnel cloud sightings. But a dispatcher said all the activity was actually in southern Douglas County, although visible from the Tri Lakes area.
