Dan Russell filled up at the Shell station at Chestnut and West Fillmore streets Monday. A month ago, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas averaged $3.30 in the area.

Monday, at least two gas stations in the region were selling regular unleaded for $1.91 a gallon, and several others were only a few cents higher. The decline in the cost of gas has been as quick and startling as its rise, due in part to falling crude oil prices and lower demand by motorists. Just a month ago, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded averaged $3.30 in the Pikes Peak region, according to AAA. The highest average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded came July 17, at $3.98.
