MILO BRYANT: Don't ignore goals for lack of challenge

THE GAZETTE

The letters and phone calls about the next Fitness Challenge have been plentiful, and each one has been appreciated.

But there will be no Fitness Challenge 2008.

The Olympic Games take place in August. The Gazette is sending me and three other journalists to Beijing to cover them. I'll be gone the month of August, right in the middle of our normal time for the challenge. Add to that the time spent preparing for the Olympics, and the Fitness Challenge just wasn't feasible.

When I return from Beijing, I will be leaving The Gazette to start a fitness consulting/training business in San Diego. And I just don't believe I'm up for the 1,100-mile commute.

We're working to make sure the column continues to run in The Gazette. It has been a great five years writing this column and sharing a few minutes each Monday with you.

The fitness business constantly changes. I hope to be in this spot to talk about those changes and why they matter or why they don't.

For now, let's talk about what we can do to challenge our minds and bodies this summer.

Just like last summer, we need to write a letter about what we'd like to see happen in the next few months.

Go to the blog (milobryant.blogspot.com) to see the letter I've written to myself if you want an example. You're going to do the same thing - write a letter to yourself explaining what you want to accomplish this summer and why. Don't like my style? That's fine. Just put something in print, something you can refer to whenever it's needed.

What you want to accomplish could be as simple as weight loss or as big as a century ride or a marathon. Maybe it's playing a round of golf without getting tired or hiking up and down our mountain then going dancing that night. The "why?" could be as unique as the goal. Still, we should all dig a little for the "why?" Go beyond the superficial and reach for the meaning of the accomplishment.

Let's figure out how we're going to accomplish our goal. How are we going to alter our diet? Are we going to change our workout program? If so, how?

I won't be here in person, but I'd like to generate a little discussion that will continue to help those who need it. I'll post regular updates on the blog, starting with the letter. There will be pictures some days, video others. Go on, check it out.
Ask questions, if needed. Give suggestions, too - because something tells me to accomplish my goal, I'm going to need a few tips.
