Golf tourney to offset college costs

Sierra High School is hosting a golf tournament to help low income college-bound students with those nickle and dime expenses that add up to big bucks. Sierra Principal Lori Peterson notes that expenses such as college applications, ACT and SAT fees, dorm deposits and others can be daunting financial obstacles.

The golf tournament is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sept. 18 at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club  on Fort Carson. Individuals and teams are welcome. Cost is $75 per player. Donations are welcome from those who do not want to play.

Writing marathon set

Never have time to write? If so, the Pikes Peak Writing Marathon may be  “write” down your alley. The free event, sponsored by the Southern Colorado Writing Project and Pikes Peak Library District, will begin at noon Sept. 11, in the Carnegie Room at the Penrose Library, 20 N. Cascade Ave.

Participants will listen to a special reading to get the creative juices flowing. Then groups of five will find public spaces and cafes downtown to write and socialize. At 4 p.m. the groups will return to the library for a read-around.

Ribbon-cutting for literacy

There will be a ribbon cutting at the Grant Library, 1637 Flint Street, on Fort Carson at 4:30 p.m. Tueday to kick off the Fort Read program sponsored by the Children’s Literacy Center. The pogram will offer tutoring to students below grade level in Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8.
         

Visiting Writers Series kicks off

The first event of the Colorado College Visiting Writers Series will be at 7 p.m., Thursday at Packard Hall on campus. The talk will be by Aubrey Hirsch, the college’s Daehler Fellow in fiction. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. The writers series talks are free and open to the public and will feature 10 authors through April. They are sponsored by the school in conjunction with the MacLean Visiting Writers Endowment. For information call 389-6853.

Week of free lamination offered

Mardel is giving a little something to teachers: up to 25 feet of free lamination Monday though Sept. 11.
The Christian and education supply store, 5964 Barnes Road, is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The regular price for laminating items is 25 cents per foot.
In a news release, the company said the event is to acknowledge the struggles teachers face with ever-shrinking school and personal budgets.

CCU gets accreditation review

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools will visit Colorado Christian University Oct. 4-6 for an extensive evaluation for accreditation.

One of the university’s founding institutions was accredited by the commission in 1981 and CCU has continued its accreditation since then. Colorado Christian University’s accreditation is at the master’s level and includes other locations around the state.

Written comments need to include the name, address, and telephone number of the sender and must be received by Sept. 6.

Scouts build patio for Manitou high

Manitou Springs High School students have a new outdoor space with tables and chairs where they can gather with friends or study.

More than 20 scouts from Troop 18, parents and friends volunteered time for the project organized by Jonathan Toman as part of his Eagle Project. The Manitou Springs Kiwanis Club sponsored the Scouts.

More than 70 Scouts have attained Eagle rank in Troop 18, and more than 12 of their projects have helped Manitou Springs School District 14.
