Hikers rescued in Waldo Canyon area

THE GAZETTE

El Paso County Search and Rescue found three missing hikers from Missouri in the Waldo Canyon area just before 9 p.m. Monday, about five hours after they called 911 and reported that they had mistakenly veered off the Waldo Canyon Trail and were lost.

The hikers, who included two adult males and an adult female, were "cold, tired and hungry" and were being led down a trail to Cascade, where search and rescue officials will determine whether they need medical attention, said Reg Francklyn, the group's spokesman.

Searchers found footprints on trails near Cascade and used GPS receivers and software to estimate where the missing hikers would be, Francklyn said. Multiple teams totaling 13 people plus two people from the Cascade Fire Department participated in the search, he said.

The hikers were lightly dressed and faced temperatures well below freezing by the time they were found, Francklyn said.

Their names were not released.
