Legislature takes a snow day
Though Thursday's blizzard provided a perfect opportunity to turn partisan warfare into a real-life battle, the Colorado Legislature wound up taking a pass.
After state Sen. Mike Kopp, R-Littleton, issued a challenge from the Senate to the state House of Representatives for a snowball fight on the Capitol lawn, members of the House were raring to go. Kopp said in a statement that he'd turn the House of Representatives into the "House of Pain."
Kopp's prediction prompted other legislators to issue challenges of their own, and soon legislators in both houses were loudly predicting victory. And ironically, most of their targets were also members of their own party.
"I'd like to peg Sen. Gibbs, because he's too pretty," Rep. Joe Miklosi, D-Denver, said of the youthful Sen. Dan Gibbs, D-Silverthorne.
Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, said his house colleague Rep. Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, "Needs some chin music."
And Rep. Ed Casso, D-Thornton, declared that he'd peg "Anyone who gets in my way."
Unfortunately, the fight never took place, since the Senate finished up its work about two hours before the House did.
The Legislature adjourned early Thursday afternoon and decided to take a snow day on Friday, given the dangerous road conditions.
