Inmate dies in holding cell at El Paso County courthouse

An El Paso County Criminal Justice Center inmate died Monday while in a courthouse holding cell, according to a sheriff's spokeswoman.

The male inmate, who was not identified Monday afternoon, was at the Terry R. Harris Judicial Complex, 270 S. Tejon St., either awaiting a court hearing or having returned from one, said sheriff's Sgt. Jeanette Whitney.

In addition to not identifying the man, Whitney said she could not comment on a possible cause of death or why the inmate was in custody.

"The case is under investigation, and it's still in its preliminary stages now," Whitney said.
