BEST AND BRIGHTEST: Teen keeps on moving

SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Just trying to get an interview with busy Amanda Kesting was a challenge.

She took a break from the International DECA, Association of Marketing Students, competition in Anaheim, Calif., earlier this month just long enough to talk about years of accomplishments any adult would be proud to put on a résumé.

Those feats included organizing a Mothers Against Drunk Driving public relations blitz with an October 2008 concert at Acacia Park, a video guitar game-off, educating her peers about the ethics of advertising and marketing of alcohol to youth and a visual demonstration that stunned students at Pine Creek High School.

"It was a lot of work," said Kesting. "I learned a lot of just how much detail goes into every little thing. I never thought about things like getting a noise hardship permit" (from Colorado Springs for the downtown concert.)

She also secured funding from the McDivitt Law Firm, arranged insurance for the concert and enlisted fellow students in helping spread the word about the dangers of drinking alcohol and driving.

"Amanda's strength of character was apparent throughout her commitment to all phases of this program," wrote Karen Teel, youth program specialist for MADD Colorado. "She was steadfast in her commitment to MADD's mission and she was absolutely sure of her team's ability."

Through it all, Kesting kept her grades at above an "A" average, performed in school plays, was active in her church, volunteered for El Pomar and mentored eighth grade students coming into high school.

Whew. No wonder it was difficult getting her to stop for an interview.

Kesting plans to study communications at Arizona State University. Her friends think she's doing a pretty good job of communicating already.

"I try to always go around and make friends with new people," Kesting said. "Everyone has at least one thing in common. If you find that thing, you can get along with that person."
