Local businesses and organizations deserve some of the community love that's often reserved for job-toting employers that come to town. At least, so says the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corp.

Thirteen employers, organizations, individuals and local governments were honored Monday by the EDC as part of its third annual Excellence in Local Industry Awards. A 14th award was given separately by another group. The recognition took place during an evening reception at The Broadmoor hotel on the city's southwest side.

Though not all of the recipients are Springs-based, all have local ties and were judged to have made significant contributions in the past year to the Pikes Peak region.

The recipients were:

• Chairperson Award: City of Colorado Springs, Mayor Lionel Rivera, the U.S. Olympic Committee and LandCo Equity Partners. The parties assembled a $53 million incentives deal to keep the USOC headquarters in Colorado Springs where it's been since 1978, and move its offices to downtown.

• Community Infrastructure Award: Pikes Peak Workforce Center. The award recognized the organization's projects and services that are designed to create skilled workers for today's economy.

• Community Investment Award/Local: Springs Fabrication Inc. The company, which designs and manufactures metal products, invested $5.5 million to double the size of its operations to 100,000 square feet and expects to add 50 workers during the next six months.

• Community Investment Award/National: Northrop Grumman Corp. The global defense and technology company, based in Los Angeles, opened a 124,000-square-foot office building in May near the Colorado Springs Airport on the city's southeast side.

• Corporate Citizenship Awards: TAEUS International Corp. and T. Rowe Price. TAEUS, a Springs-based engineering firm, donated $500,000 to St. Mary's High School for construction of an athletic field complex; the company also bought a scoreboard for Divine Redeemer Catholic School and has donated more than $25,000 to Care & Share, the Marian House Soup Kitchen and other community groups. Employees of T. Rowe Price, the Maryland-based financial services giant, volunteered time to community service projects and events throughout the Pikes Peak region.

• Innovation Award: Neumann Systems Group. The Springs-based business was recognized for its work on a pollution control system the company expects will reduce greenhouse gases.

• International Award: CEA Technologies Inc. The Springs-based contract medical device company has expanded to the Dominican Republic, which has enabled growth in Colorado Springs.

• Longevity Award: El Paso Western Pipelines. The division of Houston-based energy giant El Paso Corp. was honored for its 80 years in the Pikes Peak region.

• Public/Private Partnership Award: Colorado Springs Utilities. The city-owned utilities operation joined with Neumann Systems Group to test and implement a new technology designed to help customers by keeping bills lower and reducing emissions.

In addition, the Colorado Springs Diversity Forum awarded its first Inclusion Award to T. Rowe Price for recruiting, developing and retaining individuals with varied backgrounds and experiences, and offering programs to enhance employee awareness of global diversity and inclusion strategies.
