Ex-backer of Maes says she gave him cash for mortgage help
A former supporter of Republican gubernatorial nominee Dan Maes' said she gave him cash to help pay his mortgage after he told her he was struggling financially. Freda Poundstone, the former mayor of Greenwood Village, said she gave Maes "more than $300" after he told her he was behind on the mortgage on his Evergreen home. Maes denied seeking or accepting help to make a mortgage payment. He said he met Poundstone at her bank and she gave him $300 in cash as a campaign contribution. "I don't know where she is getting this stuff," Maes said. "Three hundred dollars wouldn't even pay my cellphone bill. Three hundred dollars wouldn't pay 10 percent of my mortgage." He added: "We're all done with this conversation." Maes referred questions on why Poundstone does not show up as a contributor on his campaign-finance reports to his wife, Karen, who works as his campaign treasurer. Karen Maes had not responded to repeated requests for comment made beginning Wednesday evening. Maes campaign spokesman Nate Strauch said Thursday afternoon that they were still trying to determine why Poundstone doesn't show up as a contributor. Read more: denverpost.com
