Memorial scheduled for mountain climbing victim, Topp

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, July 30 at the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel for Peter Topp, a Colorado Springs resident who died Monday while climbing in the San Juan Mountains.

Topp, 59, an avid rock climber who had summited 45 fourteeners, had been climbing with two other people between El Diente Peak and Mount Wilson when they were caught in a rockslide and fell down the mountain. His two fellow climbers survived.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial donations be given to the National Park Foundation, the Wounded Warriors Project, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, or local search and rescue groups.
