A nonprofit organization based in Parker could be recognized by first lady Michelle Obama for helping to better the lives of military families.
Project Sanctuary is one of 20 organizations that were named as finalists on Thursday in the Joining Forces Community Challenge, which is hosted by Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden.
Judges sifted through more than 300 applications to choose the 20 finalists, which appeared to make the biggest difference in military communities, the organization said.
The competition sought organizations that strengthened military families by helping them deal with the rigors of serving in the armed services.
Project Sanctuary appeared to fit the bill.
Founded in 2007, Project Sanctuary offers military families a free, six-day retreat in the mountains of Colorado, where they stay in cabins while hiking, boating or snowmobiling, depending on the season.
The organization then offers follow-up support for each family, including housing assistance and job placement.
One organization will be named the People’s Choice Winner through a public voting competition ending March 16. A panel of five judges, including former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw, will pick five additional winners.
The winners will be recognized by Obama in an event in Washington D.C.
