Pentagon releases names of Carson casualties in Afghan attack
The names of six of the eight Fort Carson soldiers killed over the weekend in Afghanistan have been released.
Their bodies are being transferred to their families today at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
Their names released are:
- Spc. Christopher T. Griffin of Kincheloe, Mich.
- Sgt. Joshua J. Kirk from Bonners Ferry, Idaho
- Spc. Stephan L. Mace of Purcellville, Va.
- Sgt. Vernon W. Martin, of Savannah, Ga.
- Spc. Michael P. Scusa of Villas, N.J.
- Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson of Reno, Nev.
In all, eight Fort Carson soldiers were killed Saturday when their company came under fire by as many as 200 insurgents slammed the American position at the outposts in Nuristan province. It was the deadliest fighting seen by Fort Carson soldiers since Vietnam and the largest loss of life for the post in single battle in Iraq or Afghanistan.
