No charges against parents who accidentally locked infant in car
Charges will not be filed against the parents of an 8-month-old child who was accidentally locked in a car last week outside a Colorado Springs restaurant.
Police spokesman Sgt. Darrin Abbink said the the parents called rescuers to report that the child was trapped in the car when they realized their mistake. The child was out of the car and had no apparent injuries when firefighters arrived.
“This was just an unfortunate accident where the parents just made a mistake,” Abbink said Monday.
The child was taken to the hospital as a precaution after firefighters were called about 1:30 p.m. Thursday to the Southgate shopping center. At the time, the temperature was in the high 70s.
It was the 89th time this year firefighters have been called about a child locked in a vehicle. CSFD responded to 181 such calls in 2009.
A vehicle with its windows closed can get significantly warmer than outside temperatures in the hot summer months. The inside of a car without any cracked windows can reach 115 degrees when it is 87 degrees outside.
