Sobriety checkpoint yields 16 DUI arrests

Several arrests were made Saturday night when Colorado Springs police officers zeroed in on people drinking and driving.

A sobriety checkpoint Saturday night yielded 16 arrests for driving under the influence, Colorado Springs police said. The checkpoint stopped drivers in the southbound lanes of Academy Boulevard just north of Maizeland Road.

In all, 1,176 people were contacted by police at the checkpoint. Of those people, 33 were evaluated for driving drunk, nearly half of which were arrested.

In addition, one person was cited for an open alcohol container and another for possessing drug paraphernalia. Seven people were cited for non-alcoholic violations.
