ALL PIKES PEAK READS: A GLANCE BACK AS WE LOOK AHEAD

Community focuses on literacy, city's future

People gathered Sunday afternoon at America the Beautiful Park for a peek back in time and a look at the city's future.
The Pikes Peak Library District launched this year's All Pikes Peak Reads, the theme of which centers on the 1930s with John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" and Timothy Egan's "The Worst Hard Time."

While children played with marbles, jacks, paper dolls and other relics, community leaders announced the Dream City: Vision 2020 project, which in the coming months will be soliciting input from various segments of the community to form a cohesive goal for what Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas will look like in 12 years.

Susan Saksa, executive director of Leadership Pikes Peak, said that in the 1930s, community members would have gathered in a town square to discuss the challenges ahead.

"Now it is a bigger challenge for us to get all of the voices of our community included," she said.
Jim Bergacker, 11, said he imagines that in 2020, Colorado Springs will be a host for new technologies and power its residents with solar and wind power.

Sherrill Wyeth, the literacy source coordinator for the Pikes Peak Library District, hopes that by 2020, every resident will be able to read and write.

"An educated, literate citizenry is imperative," Wyeth said.

Ted Haggard is starting new church at his Colorado Springs home.
What's your view?
Good for him. If God has called Haggard to return to ministry, he should obey.
Haggard should stay out of the ministry. He has too much baggage to lead a church.
I don't care what Haggard does, and I'm sick of hearing about him in the news.
Haggard and anyone crazy enough to attend his church deserve each other.
Haggard has a lot to offer as a pastor. Let's give him a chance.
