Toddler dies after fall from second story

A toddler died at Memorial Hospital on Friday night after falling from the second story of an apartment building in southern Colorado Springs, said Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Jennifer Lewis.

Police received a call at 7:30 p.m. that the child, a boy younger than 2, possibly fell and was choking, Lewis said.

The incident occurred at the Cedar Crest Apartments, 2010 Carmel Drive.

Police were at the scene Friday night, but no one was under investigation at the time, Lewis said.

According to another local news site, " the call first came at 7:30 p.m. Friday night of a child choking on a piece of candy, who later fell out of a window." Really? Just a run of FATAL BAD LUCK? God bless the poor wee one.

I wonder how a child under the age of two falls out a window - especially while choking.

Several years ago, even before the Internet, there was the story reported by a couple of different news channels here in The Springs about a baby falling out of a second story window. The baby was taken to Memorial as well and Lived. No real medical problems associated to the fall. The mother’s name was Misty Berry (Misty Mountan to her friends). Misty was a 19 year old unwed mother at the time and if we have Facebook at the time would have had many many friends listed. She was just a wonder young lady. At the time of this incident, Misty lived in the “Prince Hall Apartments.” This complex was low-income housing because like I mentioned Misty was young and unwed and having a hard time making a living for herself and her child. She WAS NOT a crackhead.

Bad things happen to kids and there is little to nothing that parents can do. They are not Crackheads or negligent parents. Being a kid is a very dangerous part of life as kids have no sense of fear because they have no idea. These parents have lost the most precious part of life -- a toddler.

Now before we rush to judgement lets hope the CSPD can do a fair and balanced investigation. Rushing to judgment is harmful and dangerous.

According to channel 11 news, the boy fell 3 stories while in the care of his mother's apartment mate. He apparently fell from a walkway, which causes me to question the safety of the building - I wonder if the property owner can be held liable for the unsafe common areas.

Some apartments have areas overlooking common areas, and the banister bars are not close enough together to keep a child from falling through them.

Since apartment complexes usually are "family friendly" it should behoove the property owner to make sure that there are some safety measures in place.

I hope the mother sees an attorney to at least see about some kind of compensation, in the least to pay for the child's final expenses.
