A 31-year-old man found slumped over and bleeding in a pickup truck Friday afternoon was shot to death, authorities said Saturday.

The death of Adrian Jimenez-Torres of Colorado Springs is the 28th homicide this year, a record for the city, police said. The previous highs for homicides were 27 in 1991, 1999 and 2002, police said.

Despite beating a record for a single year, the rate of homicides has declined considerably since the last record was set.

In 1991, Colorado Springs had an estimated 286,972 resi- dents, or about 100,000 fewer

people than live here now. The rate of homicides that year was 9.4 for every 100,000 residents. With 28 homicides this year, the rate is about 7.2 per 100,000 residents.

A police report said officers found Jimenez-Torres about 12:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Murray Hill Apartments complex, in central Colorado Springs, north of Platte Avenue and Murray Boulevard. Officers went to the parking lot to investigate a “suspicious vehicle” and reports of a man sitting in the vehicle slumped over.

An autopsy conducted Saturday found Jimenez-Torres died of multiple gunshot wounds, and the county coroner ruled his death a homicide.

Additional details weren’t available Saturday. Police didn’t say whether they had identified suspects or made any arrests. Several people at the apartment complex said they noticed police on Friday but knew nothing about the death.

Homicides have happened all over the city this year, from a shooting rampage at New Life Church on the north side Dec. 9 that left two teenagers dead to the fatal shooting of a Fort Carson soldier in a bank parking lot in the Broadmoor area in August.

Police have identified and arrested suspects in nearly all the homicides this year. The exceptions include:

- The death of Elbert Nakai, 33, who was found stabbed to death Feb. 21 inside his room at the Gables Motel on North Nevada Avenue;

- The April 18 death of Terry L. Wilson, 53, a cab driver who was killed by a stray bullet during a gun battle between two groups in downtown Colorado Springs;

- The July 17 death of Jamil Salaam, 23, who was shot and killed near the 800 block of Chapman Road.

With six homicides so far, December has been the deadliest month of the year for Colorado Springs. Two of the deaths this month, those of sisters Stephanie and Rachel Works, were tied to a shooting rampage that started earlier in the day in a Denver suburb and claimed two other lives there.
