Man who shot intruders now a victim of shooting
Fountain police are investigating a predawn drive-by shooting at a house on Fountain Mesa Road where two armed, masked intruders were shot and wounded earlier in the week.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jess Freeman said someone shot out the windows of a Ford Explorer and shot a truck parked in the driveway of the home early Thursday.
Witnesses say they saw a late ’80s silver Toyota Corolla leave the area immediately after the shooting.
“It’s been one of those weeks,” Freeman said.
Four people were asleep inside the house at the time of the shooting, including 19-year-old Cody Buckler, who shot the two intruders late Sunday after he awoke and found them carrying his flat-screen television out of the house.
Police said both intruders were carrying semiautomatic handguns.
Police said they think the drive-by shooting was related to the robbery.
They immediately took in one of the suspects, 27-yearold Jorge Elugardo, for questioning. Elugardo was later released.
“He was involved in a home invasion at this address,” Freeman said. “He bonded out Wednesday. There’s a drive-by shooting there a few hours later. He’s an obvious person of interest.”
Elugardo was shot in the upper left shoulder during the burglary, police said.
Another suspect, Brian Kennedy, 23, was shot in the right arm, police said.
The men were arrested after seeking medical treatment for their injuries. Kennedy had surgery before being released from a hospital.
Both were arrested Tuesday and are accused of first-degree burglary, menacing and theft, Freeman said. Kennedy remains in jail on $25,000 bond.
Buckler said the gunfire woke him early Thursday, and he was angry that his vehicles were shot up. On Thursday afternoon, he moved out of the house.
“If they are going to just drive by and shoot at me, and don’t want to stop in no more, then I’m just going to move out,” Buckler said.
