THE GAZETTE

Police on Wednesday identified the homeless man killed more than two weeks ago in an attack downtown.

Darrell Newhouse, 50, was found dead Sept. 1 on the south side of Bijou Street near the Sierra Madre Street intersection after police responded to an assault report near Bijou Street and Cascade Avenue.

Matthew Rowland, 48, is suspected of straddling and choking Newhouse. Rowland was arrested shortly after the attack and remains in the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on suspicion of first degree murder; he is due in court Sept. 29, when prosecutors could file charges.

Police attributed Newhouse's homelessness in the delay of identification and family notification.
