Not enough postage on ballot? Not a problem
If you forgot to affix extra postage to your mail-in ballot, don't worry it's not on its way back to you.
"They won't return those as undeliverable to the voter," El Paso County Election Manager Liz Olson said.
"We don't want people to be concerned if they didn't have enough postage that we're not going to count their ballot or we'll set it aside."
The Nov. 4 ballot requires 59 cents, because the ballot is larger than normal, making it weigh more than is covered by a first-class 42-cent stamp.
Olson said her office is trying to encourage people to use adequate postage, so the county can avoid paying the additional expense.
Those who don't want to pay the extra postage can drop their ballots at the clerk's office at Centennial Hall, 200 S. Cascade Ave, as well as the early voting sites and the clerk's satellite offices.
"We don't budget for this," she said.
As of Tuesday morning, 60,771 mail ballots had been returned out of 149,761 mail ballots requested.
Olson said she didn't know how many of those required the county to cover part of the postage but that the Postal Service will bill the county after the election.
If the 88,990 mail ballots not yet received have only a 42-cent stamp, the bill would exceed $15,000.
County officials began counting ballots on Monday and said results are kept secure so that nobody knows the tallies before vote counts are released after polls close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4.
The Clerk and Recorder's Office reported Tuesday that 17,234 people had voted at early-voting sites since early voting began Oct. 20.
The busiest site was at Chapel Hills Mall with 7,632 voters, followed by The Citadel mall with 5,010, and Centennial Hall with 4,592.
Early voting will continue through Friday at these sites:
Centennial Hall, 200 S. Cascade, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Chapel Hills Mall, Suite 179, first level below the food court, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Citadel mall, Suite 3124 near JC Penney, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Registered voters still can request a mail ballot for this election. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. today . Voters have until 5 p.m. on Friday to complete the application and pick up a mail ballot in person at the downtown election office at Centennial Hall.
All mail ballots must be received at the Clerk & Recorder's Office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.
