Iowa wind power company to expand to the Springs

THE GAZETTE

Prevailing Power LLC, a southwestern Iowa company that produces small wind power systems for home and business use, will announce plans Thursday to expand in Colorado Springs, sources familiar with the company’s plan said Wednesday.

It’s not known how many jobs might be involved. The company will discuss its plans during a press conference Thursday morning at the Antlers Hilton hotel, where its CEO, Steve Stultz, had booked a room for Wednesday. He was not available for comment and officials from the Colorado Springs Regional Economic Development Corp., which is hosting the press conference, declined to comment.

Prevailing Power operates a 92,000-square-foot factory, warehouse and headquarters in Shenandoah, Iowa, where it manufactures custom towers for generators and hybrid wind and solar systems, according to the company’s Web site, www.prevailingpower.com. The towers are 40 to 60 feet tall and are designed to be used in backyards or on rooftops; one wind generating system featured on the company’s Web site generates 5 kilowatts and sells for about $24,000.

The company will become the first alternative energy firm to expand to the Springs. Five solar energy component manufacturers are based in the Denver and Fort Collins areas, and Danish wind-turbine giant Vestas Wind Systems has invested about $1 billion in the construction of four Colorado plants, including two in Brighton, one in Windsor and one in Pueblo, that are expected to employ more than 2,500.
