Superintendent chats planned
It’s time to chat again with the superintendent of Colorado Springs School District 11. Nicholas Gledich will host four community meetings this month to talk about where the district is making progress and to listen to community concerns. The schedule is: Monday at Jenkins Middle School, 6410 Austin Bluffs Parkway; Tuesday at Mitchell High School, 1205 Potter Drive; Feb. 23 at Hunt Elementary School, 917 E. Moreno Ave., and Feb. 25 at Holmes Middle School, 2455 Mesa Road. All meetings begin at 6 p.m.
Charter school hiring
A charter school for gifted learners that will open in the fall in Colorado Springs School District 11 is hiring a director along with faculty and staff. The Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning is a K-8 school for gifted, advanced, creative and twice-exceptional (those who are gifted and have learning disorders or disabilities) students. Jobs are posted at www.academyacl.org/jobs/employ.html. The first application deadline is Wednesday.
Food fight with heart
In an effort to help stock the shelves of area food pantries, four Colorado Springs high schools are competing to see which can contribute the most food for Care & Share. The new Harvest with a Heart food drive will culminate on Feb. 13 when students load what they’ve gathered into trucks provided by Two Men & A Truck for the weigh-in. Non-perishable food is being collected by students from Coronado, Mitchell, Palmer and Wasson high schools, according to a release from Colorado Springs School District 11.
School in the Woods honored
The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education recently honored organizations and individuals, including Academy School District 20’s School in the Woods. The school will be honored March 12 with the 2009 Prek-12 Education Award. Former teacher Carol Stansfield nominated the fourth-grade program, which students apply to attend. Shaw elected president of music association
Rick Shaw, assistant principal at Mountain Ridge Middle School, was elected president of the Colorado Music Educators Association at its recent conference at The Broadmoor. Shaw’s philosophy is “Music for all, and for always.” He said his experience in the classroom coupled with his role as an instructional leader will enable him to lead the association with vision. He plans to continue to generate professional development experiences for members.
