Copperhead Road nightclub ordered to pay fine

THE GAZETTE

The Copperhead Road nightclub in central Colorado Springs will have to pay $5,000 or lose its liquor license for 10 days under a deal approved Friday by the city’s liquor board.

The nightclub, 3330 N. Academy Blvd., “failed to conduct the licensed premises in a decent, orderly and respectable manner and permitted rowdiness or other disturbances or activity offensive to the senses of the average person” on Feb. 20, according to city documents. The club also served a visibly intoxicated person May 5, documents state.

City prosecutor Kyle Sauer said the nightclub received a 20-day suspension, but 10 days were held in abeyance.

“That left 10 active days (but) what we stipulated to was imposing a $5,000 fine in lieu of that 10 days of active suspension,” he said in a telephone message.

If the club doesn’t pay the fine in 30 days, its liquor license will be suspended for 10 days. And since 10 days were held in abeyance, the club will lose its liquor license for those 10 days if it violates the liquor code within the next 12 months, he said.

Earlier this month, police arrested a 22-year-old Peterson Air Force Base security policeman after he fired a gun outside the club, but it’s unclear whether that incident will land the club back in front of the liquor board.

Neither a club representative nor the club's attorney returned a call for comment.
