GEAR UP: Newton Gravity running shoe
This Boulder-based running-shoe company made a splash in 2007 by introducing a shoe that costs twice as much as most of its competitors. The pitch? The Newton has springy "midsole actuator" lugs under the ball of the foot that absorb the energy of a runner's impact, then release it to propel the runner forward, making strides more efficient and, yes, faster.
The high-end shoe also trains runners to strike the ground with the front half of the foot instead of the heel, mimicking barefoot running, which naturally eases stress on joints.
Out There's tests over several weeks didn't lead to vastly improved running times, but the shoe's design was a constant reminder to use proper, foot-forward running form, which is the best way to have a long, happy running career.
Cost: $175
Where to get them: Colorado Running Co.
Bonus: Superlight and breathable.
Bummer: Slick soles are useless on trails.
