Teen earns scholarship for project with TESSA

A recent graduate from Cheyenne Mountain High School was chosen from more than 37,000 nominees to advance in a national scholarship award program.

Rebecca Nelson, 17, is a recipient in this year's Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. She researched, wrote, directed and produced a television public service announcement and an accompanying poster campaign to promote awareness of abusive relationships for young adults.

The materials Rebecca created will be be used by TESSA, the nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence in the Pikes Peak region. Her video shows a female flower who wilts each time her boyfriend verbally and physically abuses her. Rebecca participated in a two-week training program for TESSA volunteers to complete the PSA.

The pieces were also part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. Her video may be viewed on Facebook here.

“Kohl's has rewarded thousands of amazing kids through the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program and this year alone, we are recognizing nearly 2,200 stand out youth who are making a difference with their volunteer time,” said Julie Gardner, Kohl’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “From feeding the homeless at a local shelter, collecting goods for the less fortunate or volunteering time at a community garden, these kids are making a huge impact on communities nationwide. We are inspired by their stories and are thrilled to recognize their service.”

As a regional-level winner, Rebecca qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each winner’s behalf.

Rebecca plans to attend Grove City College in Pennsylvania in the fall.
