When it comes to straight, AFA No. 1
Comments 0 | Recommend 0At the Air Force Academy you might find a trail of smoke spewing from the back of a jet, but don’t expect to see it billowing from a bong in a cadet’s dorm room.
The service academy ranked No. 1 for colleges that “don’t inhale” in The Princeton Review’s 2008 college rankings, published in the company’s “Best 366 Colleges” book.
Each year, the New Yorkbased test-prep company — not affiliated with Princeton University — produces an unscientific survey that ranks selected schools in a variety of nontraditional categories.
About 120,000 students from 366 schools, or about 325 a school, answered an 80-question survey. Students were anonymous and 90 percent of the surveys were answered online. Results were used to rank certain schools in more than 60 categories.
The AFA and Colorado College both made the company’s rankings in more than one category:
AFA:
- No. 1, Professors make themselves accessible.
- No. 7, Stone-cold sober schools.
- No. 9, Future Rotarians and Daughters of the American Revolution.
- No. 11, Is it food? Campus cafeterias with low ratings.
- No. 11, Students most nostalgic for Ronald Reagan (politically right-leaning).
- No. 14, Everyone plays intramural sports.
- No. 16, Scotch & soda, hold the scotch (low hard liquor usage).
- No. 19, Students pray on a regular basis.
COLORADO COLLEGE:
- No. 5, Town-gown relations are strained.
- No. 10, Everyone plays intramural sports.
- No. 16, Class discussions encouraged.
