Resource Council honors those who enrich seniors' lives

THE GAZETTE

Senior Resource Council, a nonprofit that provides services to and advocates for local seniors,  saluted groups and individuals from throughout the community who have “enriched the lives of seniors” at a luncheon Wednesday at Garden of the Gods Club.

Named community Senior Volunteer was 81-year-old John Dickinson, of Palisades at Broadmoor Park.

Barbara Jeanne Krekeler, SET Family Medical Clinics, received the first Joe Henjum Legacy Award. The award was named for the late military officer and nonprofit leader “who embodied the word service,” said emcee Mark Brown. Henjum, who started the Senior Resource Council to create a partnership for businesses serving seniors,  was called the “quintessential servant” and those who are nominated are judged for those same attributes. Henjum’s family was honored at the luncheon.

Brown, from AMR, said he wore a tux to lunch in honor of Henjum, who always dressed black-tie when he gave out awards as a sign of respect. Then Brown turned comic saying that people thought he was the parking attendant. "So here are your keys," he said to laughter as he piled key ring after key ring atop a table.

Named top Young Professional was Hayley Gravette; Silver Key Senior Services was honored as top nonprofit business; Home Instead Senior Care was named best for-profit business; and top youth volunteers were the Schwartz Kids Singers, who spent more than 100 hours performing for the senior community.
