Device explodes in mailbox

THE GAZETTE

A small explosive device about the size of roll of film detonated inside a Yoder mailbox Monday morning, but no one was injured, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

The force blew the mailbox door open but didn’t damage the box at 33575 Big Springs Road, sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Lari Sevene said.

Sevene said she wasn’t sure what kind of device exploded in the mailbox, but it may have been an M-80, she said.

The explosion happened sometime Monday morning, but the resident of the house didn’t notice it and report it until noon, Sevene said.

Sevene said she didn’t know of a possible motive, but the resident may have an idea of who put the explosive there, she said.

The United States Postal Service is investigating the incident, Sevene said.
