A 23-year-old Colorado Springs man was arrested early Friday in connection with a fatal shooting near Academy Boulevard and Galley Road on Thursday, police said.

According to Colorado Springs police, Erik Camacho was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder. Police said it appeared that Camacho and the victim, an adult male, knew each other. No other details of the shooting or what led to it were released Friday. The victim’s name also was not released.

Police continued their investigation behind the Water Works car wash, 1108 N. Academy Blvd., Friday morning.

Police received a report of a disturbance in the area about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and found the victim dead when they arrived. Witnesses said they heard several shots.

“We heard the gunshots,” said Adam Cather, 26, a Water Works employee who was working Thursday night at the car wash. “We looked out and we saw the car taking off. It blew through a wooden fence and crashed into the brick wall. It was chaos from there.”

Cather said he saw someone come out of the nearby EZ Ink Tattoo shop, located just west of Academy on Galley Road, as the car raced behind Water Works. The person who came out of the shop began shooting, Cather said.

Cather said police arrived on scene about five minutes later.

The parking lots of a KFC restaurant, Applebee’s Restaurant and the car wash were blocked off from Thursday night through Friday morning while police investigated.

If the man’s death is ruled a homicide by the coroner, it would be Colorado Springs’ fourth this year. The city had 32 homicides in 2011 — a record.
