SPARROW HAWK: Gadgets for the holidays

THE GAZETTE

We asked Sam Eppley, owner of Sparrow Hawk, 120 N. Tejon St., his mom, Helen, and his brother, Allen, to tell us their top gadget picks for holiday gifts this year. Here’s a look at what they see as the next must-haves for the culinary fans on gift lists.

Curious Chef Cookie Turner: $3.99
Curious Chef is a line of gadgets and aprons for the junior chef on your holiday list. The cookie turner has an ergonomic handle for small hands. It‘s made of nylon to withstand 420 degrees. It has soft-touch button grips and is dishwasher safe.

Joseph Joseph Spaghetti Measure: $8.99
The compact spaghetti measure has an adjustable guide to allow you to measure out one to four servings of dry pasta. You slide the small lever around the side of the disc, opening the camera-style aperture to determine spaghetti portion size. It’s made of polypropylene and is dishwasher safe.

Original Spaghetti Scrub: $9.99
Made by Goodbye detergent!, this is a line of eco-friendly scrubs made with materials such as recycled corncobs, peach pits and walnut shells. The reusable scrubs have natural abrasives that make it easier to clean with less detergent. Detergents and soaps contain toxins and chemicals that are not good for the environment.

They last for months and because of their shape, they are pliable enough to reach trickier cleaning jobs and tight spots such as corners and behind faucets. They dry quickly and never get moldy or rust. They can even be used to peel veggies.

Tortilla Warmer:$9.99
Made by The Foodwarmer Company in Pueblo,  the tortilla warmer heats tortillas in a microwave without changing their flavor or characteristics, and keeps them hot and fresh for more than 45 minutes. Tortillas go from the refrigerator to the microwave to the table in just minutes without becoming hard and crusty.

They are 12 inches in diameter and can hold up to a dozen large burrito-sized flour tortillas or up to a dozen of any size corn tortilla. They are made of poly/cotton cloth that is easily cleaned by hand or machine washing.

The Greens Sud Green: $12.99
This a whimsical scrubbing and scouring brush that is part of a family of fun kitchen tools designed for function and comfort. Mud Green is a take on a punk-rock star, made with materials that are planet-friendly and help you reduce your carbon footprint. The tools are recyclable.

Animal House Skunk Duster: $12.99
OK, so a duster doesn’t seem like a kitchen tool, but Sparrow Hawk is hard to pin down. Take the stink out of dusting with this adorable duster. It looks like a skunk with an electrostatic “tail,” which picks up dust easily. The soft-grip handle is comfortable and there’s a hook for hanging it up.

Microplane Salt Shaver Set: $24.99
The shaver is made with razor-sharp stainless steel blades that will not clog. It’s made to shave hard rock salts to release maximum flavor. It has nonslip rubber end pieces for added stability for shaving the hardest salt rocks. It’s dishwasher safe. A small jar of Himalayan pink salt is included.

Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker: $31.99
Here’s a fun way to crush flavor from whole spices, herbs, garlic, nuts, citrus rind or bay leaves in seconds. Pop ingredients inside, add the magic ball and give it a good shake. The ceramic ball does all the work crushing, grinding and bruising. Liquids such as oil and cream can be added to create dressings and marinades.
