Yoga enthusiast hope to create the world's highest human spiral

SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Kat Tudor enjoys a good yogic spiral. She’s already organized two: one at Colorado College’s Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center and the other at America the Beautiful Park. At each event, 200 participants held hands and stood or sat in place to make the spiral shape.

For the third spiral, Tudor says she will lead the world’s highest yogic spiral. She’s leading participants to the top of Pikes Peak via the Cog Railway on Wednesday. Bob Tudor has composed music to accompany yoga stretches and chants on the ride up.

“The spiral,” said Tudor, “is mathematical, and artists have used the spiral as a symbol of eternity.”

Tudor, artist and founder of the Smokebrush Foundation, said participants respond the shape’s energy.

“One thing that is very interesting to me is this spontaneous choreography,” she said.

At the first two spirals, participants remained holding hands, reluctant to disconnect from one another. At Cornerstone, people took the spiral outside and created a circle around the building.

“I don’t know how to explain it or why at each event, this beautiful, intuitive choreography happens,” she said.

There’s not as much room to spiral out on the top of Pikes Peak, but Tudor’s sure of the spiral’s success.

“When we get to the top, we’ll form the yogic spiral and send a message of peace out over the city in all directions,” she said.
