7 D-11 students win science writing awards
The Colorado Springs School District 11 administration and school board recognized seven students for their scientific writing skills Wednesday night.
The D-11 students who worked on the project were: Victor Gordillo, Kyle Helmick, Krystal Arnold, Kurt Lahmers and Victoria Arnold, all from Doherty High School; and Cameron Jesse from Jenkins Middle School.
They recently won science writing awards from Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies (first place) and American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (third place).
The students are part of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society’s youth group who coauthored an award-winning article published by Deposits, an international mineral, gem and fossil magazine.
The students worked with ancient rocks and minerals from Egypt that were fashioned into jewelry and ritual objects over 3,000 years ago. Examining the artifacts under a microscope, learned to capture images of each item, take measurements and recorded their findings. Students were each given a research assignment and their work was assembled into an article.
